Top half of a "Hello my name is" label.

Hello friends! Welcome to issue 0 of my newsletter. Since this is the very first time I’ve sent out this (or any) newsletter, I should introduce myself.

I’m Vic, a human in Raleigh, North Carolina. I am a dad, runner, biker, beginner violinist, and a Principal Engineer at Twilio Segment. In the evenings and on weekends, I am usually making food for my family, and am an Indie maker working on everyoak.com.

I work on a lot of little projects that never see the light of day. Some of them become blog posts, many just get forgotten. This newsletter will become a way for me to talk about some of them as I push them over arbitrary finish lines.

Naming is Hard

If you have done any work with computers, you’ve likely heard this joke-

There are 2 hard problems in computer science: cache invalidation, naming things, and off-by-1 errors.

And it’s true! I sat here unnecessarily wondering what to call this newsletter for a lot longer than I needed to. My plan is for this newsletter to be about:

  • projects I’m currently working on + learning

  • something I’ve recently cooked for my family

  • thoughts on ongoing things in tech

Okay wait for it… I have an idea, and it’s also a bit of a pun using the name of a Unix utility. Welcome to MAKE ALL THE THINGS.

See you next time, friends.
